When purchasing lower grade  treads you may encounter some of the following issues which can be costly and time consuming to fix!

Unevenly matched grain will often fail to stain evenly, requiring extra labor time and skillful stain matching.

Roughly cut lumber will require additional  sanding and can increase labor time.

Knot holes require wood filler which can be an additional expense and require added labor. More often than not, the wood filler will not “take” the stain and will still be noticeable after the entire tread has been stained and sealed.

Inferior treads will often contain wood filler to cover knots, holes or gauges in the the lower grade lumber.
