Over the years, stair builders have adapted from unreliable methods to the safe and solid stair building methods you find today. Laws are in place to enforce very strict stair building regulations which have caused stair builders to refine their skills and develop their techniques so your stairs pass code and will not interfere with your home inspection. If your stair design is not up-to-date with the latest building regulations, you might not get your framing permit. All of our dealers use installers / contractors that are familiar with these regulations.

Stair Builders & building regulations

The standard single family home should abide by the following common building regulations: The stairs should have minimum headroom of 6 ft. 8 in. In addition, your stairs should have a stair depth of 10 inches and inclination angle should be 34 to 40 degrees. These are standard practices but some not so common circumstances may occur. Stair builders will be happy to discuss any of these circumstances. You can find our locations by clicking here.

Your stairs should also have a bull nose tread with minimum space for clearance at the top and bottom of the stairs. This is necessary for moving furniture and is highly recommended. There should be handrails on one or both sides of the stairs for safety. The hand rails should be located at 34” to 38” on the treads nose. If you fail to follow these regulations it will lead to failing the inspection test leading to a loss of money and time. We guarantee you will meet all stair builders regulations and that your stairs will pass inspection.

As stair design progresses, iron balusters are becoming increasingly popular among stair remodeling. Your stair system should not have any gap greater than 4 inches or else you will fail inspection and stair builders know this. A gap greater than 4 inches could allow for small children to squeeze through the spacing. We take all stair code into account before we install your stairs.

Another crucial aspect that your stair builders will cover are newel posts. Newel posts are the supporting posts that give your stairs the strength it needs to support itself and any person using it for leverage. Newel posts should be found at the start of your steps, at every transition and / or every eight feet. If your stairs are currently out of code, call up one of our dealers so we can get your stairs up to date and safe. Our stair builders are standing by.

Stair Builders & parts of your stairs

A stairway is a series of steps with or without landings or platforms, which is installed between two or more floors of a building. Stairs provide easy access to various levels of the home. All styles of homes, except the ranch with no basement have stairs. Prime considerations in stair design should be easy ascent or descent and safety.

A house may have a main stairs) from the first floor to the second floor or from a split- level foyer to the first floor) and/or a service stairs. The main stairs are usually assembled with prefabricated parts and are much better quality than service stairs. They are generally made of hard woods such as oak, maple, or birch.
